Cone and Harris Lens Model for
Service-Learning

The Lens Model for Service-Learning

Picture
Drawing on the wisdom of the seminal Cone & Harris Service-Learning model
The Service-Learning model proposed by Dick Cone & Susan Harris has proven to be seminal in the thinking & practice of many SL practitioners in Australian schools. The model proposes deep learning is more likely to occur when:
  • students are set up with conceptual lenses through which to see, understand and interpret their service experience
  • students are enabled to process the meaning of the learning and fully integrate experiences with their existing knowledge and understanding through structured, concept based reflection and mentoring
The insights of the Cone & Harris model are drawn from philosophy, psychology and social theory.
